Generosity of the Sun

Today I am meditating with part of the Thanksgiving Address of the Iroquois:

“We now send greetings and thanks to our eldest Brother, the Sun. Each day without fail he travels the sky from east to west, bringing the light of a new day. He is the source of all the fires of life. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to our Brother, the Sun.”

Although I normally take it for granted, it is an awesome thing that all light, warmth and energy on the earth come from the sun. Even when the sun is hidden behind clouds, we still have daylight and warmth, a small inkling of the power of the sun.

For me this is an image of the generosity of Creator’s love, which is for all creatures of the earth, including all humanity. Creator, like the sun is benevolent: giving without demands, not weighing or judging our worthiness for sun, or for love. I am thankful.

Today may the sunshine remind us of the sun’s strength and energy flowing to us. We are alive! May we channel this energy for our own health and wholeness and for the healing of the world.

Gratitude Prompt: How have you experienced the faithfulness and generosity of the sun? of Creator?

Philosophia: Giving Back and Paying Forward

Thanksgiving is the best response to such an enormous gift as the light, warmth and energy of the sun. We can never repay such an enormous gift. But gratitude welling up within us shows itself in our desire to be our best selves, to bear the fruits of kindness and compassion to ourselves and to others and with respect for all of creation.
